At GameFest 2007, Microsoft has softens it’s stance on the idea of user generated content on Xbox Live. The idea has been around for a while but the fact that Epic, with Unreal Tournament 3, is pushing for user generated mods, and has support from Sony, is making Microsoft rethink it’s company line which, to this point, has been simply “no.”
Microsoft has said that developers may be able to have user generated content in future games by using the Xbox Live Silver Platform (XLSP). The XLSP will allow publishers to host user generated content on their own servers and be responsible for monitoring and policing the content. All after Microsoft approval of course.
User generated content does seem like a good idea but many gamers fail to realize that one of the things that has made XBL so enjoyable thus far is the fact that Microsoft controls it so tightly and has made the experience of a consistent quality. Opening up the platform is inevitable but publishers will have to pick up the torch that Microsoft has held for more than 5 years in controlling the platform.
Do you want user generated content on XBL or do you think it will diminish the overall quality of the product?
