Video game sales continued their strong growth this year, up 46% over the same period last year. The figure is more surprising considering August is usually a slow month for the gaming business, as consumers wait for the huge Holiday blockbusters.Microsoft was bolstered by strong performances from their recent price cut and my strong software sales. Bioshock led the way, selling 490 thousand units on the back of strong critical acclaim. The Xbox 360 version of Madden NFL 08 also saw great success on the platform, selling 896 thousand copies, just less than the Playstation 2 and Playstation 3 versions combined, refuting Jeff Bell’s recent predictions.
The Nintendo Wii continued its strong run selling 404 thousand systems, riding the wave of titles like Metroid Prime 3: Corruption (218K), Wii Play (257K) and Mario Strikers Charged (218K).
The Sony Playstation 3’s sales dropped by 20 thousand units under last months totals, as Sony sold out the last of their 60 gigabyte consoles. Although sales dropped this month, Sony still picked up the pace from their waning spring sales which never topped more than 100k. Software sales were up, in part due to the Warhawk/Blutooth headset bundle. Of course this month’s NPD figures won’t take into account any Warhawk units sold through the Playstation Store.
