Remember the famous TSR role-playing game, Dungeons and Dragons, that got a lot of board game publications during the late 1980s? Well, it all led to even an arcade adventure video game after awhile, beginning with the one recorded here in three parts:
Of all the games Capcom made as followups to the approach they used in Final Fight, this has got to be the coolest. In fact, note how the innkeeper with whom you record your name in this game is drawn to look like Mike Hagger as well!
Naturally, there’s plenty of items to be found here for use in scoring points, buying special weapons, and let’s not forget how there’s plenty of alternate paths to choose from, as well as a couple of secret rooms. Four players you have here, the warrior, female elf, dwarf and cleric. And the boss here who’s surely even more difficult than the last one is the giant red dragon, Flamewing! Look how he can wipe out players in a single shot if they’re not careful! As for the final boss, no need to waste that many special weapons on him, as he’s deliberately meant to be immune to almost all of them, but ones like the plasma shot can certainly give you a slight advantage in getting near enough to rip him one with your standard weapon!
There’s supposed to be a post-closing credits epilogue, but it doesn’t always appear here, which is a shame, since it shows a discussion between the heroes as they make their way back to the last village. The female elf stays behind to bask in the sunlight and admire how they managed to bring glory back to the countryside.
All in all, this is by far Capcom’s best side-scrolling game of its kind.
