Recordings of the 19** series
Submitted by Gaming Briefs and Nostalgia Bits
This was one of Capcom’s most famous franchises of overhead scrolling shoot-em-ups. Let’s begin with the first entry, 1942:
This was the second game Capcom produced back in the day and the first designed by Yoshiki Okamoto, shortly after Konami had let him go because they didn’t want to give him a raise he’d demanded if he was to stay on (now, I’m betting that after all these years, they wish they had). You pilot an American fighter jet as it battles against the Japanese air fleet during WW2. And besides special bonuses, you can get special accessories like side cannons. These are only temporary, and if they’re shot, they’ll be gone, so be careful to look out for them as much as your own airplane!
Then, we have 1943: The Battle of Midway:
Man, those two times when lightning flashes in the sky are scary! There was also an update made the following year that was released in Japan only, and in the US was only released on home consoles like this NES version was.
Then, we have a slight prequel, 1941: Counter Attack:
As usual, the music here is as brilliant as the gameplay.
Then, we have 19XX: The War Against Destiny:
I have no idea what exact period this is meant to be set in, or I can’t be sure if it’s set during WW2. I assume maybe it’s a time-travelling game set throughout the 20th century, almost like Time Pilot? Good question. Whatever, the gameplay here simply magnificient!
Then, finally, we have 1944: The Loop Master (in 2 recordings):
This to date is the last of this series that they made, but it’s one of the best. Like some other large companies at around that time, Capcom farmed it out to special third-party developers to design the program as they themselves were dealing with even more sophisticated stuff. Among the powers your airplane has here includes the ability to charge your cannon by holding the button, but after which you need to wait a short moment until you can use it again, as it tends to overheat briefly before being useful again.
Man, this is a great series of airplane games!
