I found a review of one of the home versions of Metal Slug 3 on The Japan Times, where the reviewer says the following about some old classics:
Age has not been kind to “Pac-Man,” “Pong” or “Space Invaders” — all historic games that launched empires. In their original states, those games look like antiques, something you might play out of intellectual curiosity or a longing for nostalgia. Updates have not managed to restore their luster.
Nonsense. Those games, old as they are, still have much value in playing and haven’t lost their shine a bit over the years. Pong has its funness in trying to keep your side defended while trying to get the ball past the other side, and depending on the angle you hit the ball at, it goes either slower or faster. Space Invaders has plenty of aliens to blast and flying saucers to try and gun down as they pass by, and Pac-Man has his dots and ghosts and strategies for consuming all the latter at the same time. In fact, Pac-Man was very ahead of its time and had some of the best graphics for a game made in 1980, one more reason why it works so well even today.
He’s right though about Metal Slug, which I’ll try in time to add some videos of as well. It’s one of the best shoot-em-ups in a 2-D vein, and holds up very well in that regard. We really do need to see a return to that dimension for a change.
