This was the first of a few popular racecar games Namco made as special followups to their earlier classic, Pole Position. It’s very good, but takes practice.
An interesting fact: if you’ll notice that they used Marlboro ads in the game, they got sued for that because hadn’t gotten permission at the time. The cigarette company was already having enough problems with the criticism they were undergoing for hazards of cancer caused by smoking, and this certainly didn’t help matters for them, so they sued and Namco had to pay a fine. With the exception of that, Final Lap is a very fine racing game that’s great for playing, and was one of the first to use linkup cabinets.
