Space Ace recording

Here’s a lively laserdisc outing:

In the role of space adventurer Dexter, you need to chase after and defeat the sinister forces of the alien warmonger Commander Borf, who’s kidnapped the hero’s girlfriend, Kimberly, making your way through his dangerous ship’s corridors to find the right paths to take. The hero even has the ability to power up when exposed to certain energy effects, though oddly, he doesn’t use his physical strength as much you might think; his laser weapon is still used more often.

As with Dragon’s Lair and its sequels, the animation is again by Don Bluth, who did the voice of Borf, with other members of the production staff providing their voices as well to keep the costs down. And like those games, timing is critical for maneuvering in certain directions. The first version had special skill levels included, and later on it was re-released without most of them. This was popular enough to even garner a cartoon from Ruby-Spears Corp. later on.

By the way, it’s a good thing this tape I found doesn’t include any of the “death scenes” in it. Oh no, why should I have to include those infernal things and spoil the 8 minutes of enjoyment I had watching this? This is even better than the Dragon’s Lair series, and provides plenty of fun.
