The first Warcraft game

Submitted by Gaming Briefs and Nostalgia Bits
Back in 1994, there came along the first of these RTS concepts set in medival times. Here’s a taping of it now:

It was a brilliant game, but looks awfully complicated if we consider how building involves woodcutters, for example. Unlike Dune 2, the main game to popularize this kind [...]

More players, less sales

Submitted by Gaming Briefs and Nostalgia Bits
USA Today reports that 2009 saw more people playing video games on the various systems that have been invented, but still had to endure a serious slump. If there’s anything I was glad to see though, it’s that Modern Warfare 2 outsold Grand Theft Auto IV.

Ye Olde 3D Adventure video

Submitted by Gaming Briefs and Nostalgia Bits
A short clip of another old venture into 3D territory:

Basically a monochrome game in 3D that involves finding your way to the goal of a maze. Not bad for an early effort.

Recording of Hovertank 3D

Submitted by Gaming Briefs and Nostalgia Bits
This was one of the first games described as a first-person shooter, produced in 1991:

You control a hovertank that you take through facilities shaped like labyrinths in order to rescue scientists from enemy forces. As you progress further, the enemies you’ll meet become more numerous and dangerous. Hostages you [...]

Click over to see another nice shoot-em-up from the masters at Taito:

The ship you control here is on a mission to save Earth’s women from an evil empire trying to destroy them. You can fire in four directions, and even then, it pays to get powerups to help out. [...]

Secret Agent clip

Submitted by Gaming Briefs and Nostalgia Bits
This is not the Data East game Sly Spy from 1989, which is also known in some markets as Secret Agent, but rather, an old platform game made by 3D Realms, now mostly defunct, at the time they were publishing under the Apogee logo:

You play as a spy and [...]

Take Two’s shares take another blow

Submitted by Gaming Briefs and Nostalgia Bits
Speaking of Grand Theft Auto, it seems the game’s producer <a href=”http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20091222/ap_on_hi_te/us_take_two_mover”><span style=”color: #286ea0;”>has not had much success stockwise after selling a distribution unit</span></a>:
<blockquote>PHILADELPHIA – Shares of Take-Two Interactive Software Inc. fell Tuesday after the company sold a video games unit, a move it said would lead to a [...]

The hazards of obsession

Submitted by Gaming Briefs and Nostalgia Bits
Here’s an article in the Boston Herald about a mom whose son became obsessed with Grand Theft Auto:
It’s game over for a 14-year-old Roxbury boy, whose overwhelmed mother was so exasperated with his incessant video game playing that she called the cops on him.
The final straw for Angela Mejia [...]

Crystal Caves cassette

Submitted by Gaming Briefs and Nostalgia Bits
Another nice shareware game we have here, in 16 recordings, and I hope this works well, because even with an expandable summary code that compacts everything into a personal post page, I’m realize there could be shortcomings:

You play as Mylo Steamwitz, an intergalactic miner who’s hoping to rake up [...]

Music games didn’t sell well this year

Submitted by Gaming Briefs and Nostalgia Bits
If this Reuters report is accurate enough, music video games have taken a tumble:
DENVER (Billboard) – What a difference a year makes.
The music-game category raked in $1.4 billion in revenue last year, according to Wedbush Morgan Securities analyst Michael Pachter, driven largely by sales of “Rock Band 2″ and [...]

Thunder Dragon 2 recording

Here comes the sequel to the earlier plane fighter, in three parts:

Ground Effects clip

Right ahead it comes.

This was a pretty good entry in the drag strip racing genre. It may have used the same starting concept as Sega’s GP Tournament game from 1989, where you need to determine what spot you’ll start the official race in by winning from slot 1-8.

A neat puzzle game where you need to combine at least 2 blocks with the same design to clear the rounds. I played it years before and it was quite fun.

Bad economy closes down a watchdog

Submitted by Gaming Briefs and Nostalgia Bits
Because of the plummeting economy, a game watchdog group has had to close:
MINNEAPOLIS (AP) - David Walsh said when he was assembling his first report card on video game violence 13 years ago, children were attacking on-screen monsters or aliens with imaginary chain saws and guns.
“When I saw kids [...]

A brilliant race track challenge, this was the last coin-op Atari made to date, but it’s definitely one of the better games they’ve produced in that field. The 3D effects are very good, as are the track designs.

Arctic Adventure sojourn

Submitted by Gaming Briefs and Nostalgia Bits
A short tape of the first area:

A neat little shareware game where you’re treasure hunting in the cold caves of the Arctic. And getting around the labyrinth of paths sure ain’t easy with those spikes coming out and the abominable snowman trudging around on the ground floor. If I [...]

Take-Two takes another financial blow

Submitted by Gaming Briefs and Nostalgia Bits
In the latest news on this company I’ve come to resent because of their Grand Theft Auto nonsense, they’ve posted a new 4th quarter loss:
NEW YORK (AP) - Charges and expenses outweighed higher sales and drove video game publisher Take-Two Interactive Software Inc. to post a wider fourth-quarter loss [...]
